The land of Walleye woke to a blanket of frost covering the landscape!! I woke to the urge for coffee and a to do list!! Good afternoon from The Dutchman!! It's been an amazing couple of weeks of fall and things are just starting to heat up!! Fall is in the air, water temps are dropping and Walleyes and Saugers are putting the feed bags on!! There is still loads of shiners in the river and just outside the gap on the south end of the lake. There is still more Sauger than Walleye being caught on both the river and the lake, but dandy eater walleyes along with a few trophy's are being found in the mix! The last time I was on the water was 2 days ago and surface temp on the river was 52 degrees, with the colder night time temps I bet its under 50 degrees! I plan to get out this afternoon and will keep you posted on surface temps. The sturg continue to wreak havoc on Walleye fisherman's and woman's gear, truly putting there equipment to the test!! We've had a few rooms open up for the next few weeks of October! If you're looking to get in some truly epic fall fishing, give The Dutchman a call!!
My cowboy buddy from Wyoming, Rick and his wife DD made there way to the Mecca!! I helped them set their camper on their property down the road and then of course, we went fishing!! We were joined by fellow wolf pack member Mitch Wilmer!! It started out as a slow day of fishing, but as we made our way back from Wheelers Pt up river to The Dutchman's, fishing picked up!! By the afternoon we were in full on tugga war battles with 2 monster Rainy River Dinos, one of which DD lost her sturginity to!! HOOOWL! We also had a couple limits of nice saugers and eyes!! Oh yeah, we also had what looked a turd with fins in the box!! A Rainy River bullhead Rick insisted on keeping and made me clean!! (I've cleaned many in my day, just never any up here!) The time blew right by and I miss them guys already!! Till next time, HOOOOWL!!
I also got to be apart of something truly special this week!! Three brothers who have been spread out by 1000's of miles over the course of life, reunited at The Dutchman, and I think it's safe to say our lives have forever changed!! I wasn't fishing with old boys, oh no!!! When these boys reunited it was like the fountain of youth came out and these old boys were kids again!! Roger, Ron, and Randy! I put them in order from oldest to youngest!! Thank you guys for letting me and The Dutchess be apart of your trip!! The trip started out epic when Ron earned the nickname, The Walleye Master and joined the 30" club on his 1st Rainy River Walleye!! It was a truly epic fish that still swims these mighty waters!! Roger was 1st to lose his Sturginty!! Roger had talked to The Dutchess many times over the phone and called their group a bunch of old farts, so hence Roger was nicknamed, Old Fart by the end of the trip!! After Roger tamed his 43" Rainy River Dino, Ron was next in line to lose his Sturginity!! He lost his Sturginity to a fat 57.5" Rainy River Dino!! Last but not least was Randy, or Plunger as the brothers named him for his epic ability to clog a toilet!! LOL!! Our toilets were no match for the Plunger!! LOL! Randy lost his Sturginity to a nice 40" Rainy River Dino!! We found plenty of more Walleyes and Saugers on our adventure; I also gained 3 lifetimes of wisdom on our adventure!! We had an epic fish fry that turned into one heck of a bash that left 3 bottles of Crown empty, the image of a cowboys white a$$ as he mooned us painfully burned into my memory and me feeling like death the next day!! An awesome time was had by ALL!! (Thanks for the nightmares Rick!!) LOL!!
I'll end today by challenging you to be the best person you can be, it may sound easy, but I put myself through the same challenge everyday and I'm batting nowhere near a 1000!! Life's to short and somethings take awhile so you better get started now!! Remember were all in this together and often a lot closer than we think!! Till next time.... for those about to fish, we salute you!! I'll see you on the water!! The Dutchman signing out!! P.S. Anybody looking to lose there Sturginity give The Dutchman a call; there's no place better to do it than the Rainy River!
The land of walleye sits under overcast sky's, the wind blowing and the air is thick with moisture!! Gotta love fall fishing!!! Good evening from The Dutchman!!! Well, I can tell you a definite change happened between yesterday and today!! Walleyes!! I have been fishing the river hard the last ten days, hoping to find pods of gold in the depths of the mighty Rainy, but up to today I had only been finding a few nuggets of gold and I was not alone!! Most guests were finding little Walleye action on the river and having to bust out on the lake where the action has been hot!!! Today was a different story!! The cleaning pails were found full of nice eyes and fat eater saugers and I'm doing back flips and wind punches!!!
Had the opportunity to both break a sweat and bread with a guy I crossed paths with 6 months ago! Huge thanks to my friend Randy!! He came up from the cities to give me and the Dutchess a hand around the Resort!! A little chimney sweeping and some good old fashioned wood cutting to get the sweat rolling mixed with the chili the Dutchess whipped up and we were ready for the hardest job of all!!!! Fishing!! Yesterday afternoon was a beautiful example of what fall fishing is often about! Rain! As the rain came down, we were able to find some fish! No walleye, but the saugers we were pulling up were nice plump eaters! Duty called again this morning and we were blessed with some nice Rainy River gold! As were our guests!! Let the games begin!!
This only the beginning of my favorite time to fish Walleyes on the Rainy River! The sturgeon action has been steady as well, but all have been coming jigging! The end this month marks the end of our first year in business!! What an awesome year it's been!! We have big plans for the future of RDR, but you gotta crawl before you walk!! I have expanded my ice fishing fleet and I plan to do post dedicated to our ice fishing operation! Stay posted there may be a surprise contest to celebrate our first year!
At the end of it all!! Make sure it was all worth the while!! Get out there and do what you love!! For those about to fish, we salute you!! I'll see you on the water!!! The Dutchman signing out!!
As the day turns into night on the waters edge as I soak ever last second of light gazing out at what is in my opinion the best view on the river and the best bonus a job could ever offer a guy!! The land of walleye sits under hazy sky's from northern fires and extreme heat from mother nature herself!!! Good evening from The Dutchman!!! As I tireless work at being on vacation for a living, I find myself greeted by new smiling faces ever week!! Between the people and the view heaven can wait I got a lot living left to do!!! These last 8 months truly have been amazing!! I've done a lifetimes worth of fishing and made many new life long friends!! Fisherman in arms!! When your in a boat with a person fishing, you enter as strangers and exit as friends. I feel the first 8 hrs I spend fishing with a fellow fisherman I know more about them by the end of the day then I do most of my own family!! That's the power of fishing!! Things have been going smooth here at RDR!! Lot's of folks taking a break from reality and soaking in the view!!! No better way to shake the summer time blues then having a cold drink well soaking in the aw inspiring view that is the mighty Rainy river!! You'll forget what day it is!! LOL!! Now on display at all hours of the day....... monster flying sturgeon!!!
Speaking of sturgeon....... the bite has been in the most describable word I can think of BAD!!!! There have been fish being caught mostly on the smaller side with the best action being east of the resort Birchdale way and at night has been the best bite I've seen!! I've been soaking crawlers every other day in front of the resort with only a few little guys to show for it!! They have been rolling like crazy, and I ain't talking just little guys either!! I feel fisherman pay dearly for there passion and the most common currency is time!! Every dog has his day and a dry line catches zero fish 100% of the time!!! So try I will!!
The walleyes!!!!! The bite on the lake has remained strong with lots of folks pulling plugs in the deep mud!! The walleyes have been being caught consistent on the river on sturgeon gear and spinners with leech or crawlers!! The size on the river as of late have been good eating size to from what I have caught and seen caught, not a lot but nonetheless good eating!!! The Lake continues to be covered in hogs!!! With more 20"+ fish being caught in many cases then eaters!!
I'll end tonight by wishing everyone the best!! I hope you awake feeling the same way I have the last 8 months, excited for what the day has in store for you!!! For those about to fish, we salute you!! I'll see you on the water!! The Dutchman signing out!!
The land of walleye sits under overcast sky's!!! As I look from office at the beauty that is the mighty Rainy River, I can't help but wonder if Stanley is out there waiting for more drown some crawlers!! Hooowl!! The wolf pack is back on the attack, and having just enough luck to keep us hungry and on the hunt!! The Dutchman here, coming off a crazy awesome 4th of July weekend!! Thanks to all the guest's that spent the weekend with us!! Before I talk fishing I got give a shout out to the Quakeathon!! Every year since these boys moved away from the land of walleye, they returned each 4th of July, not to fish, oh no these boys are coming home to run home!! Each year they would run from Clementson to east Baudette, which was formally known as Spooner when these boys were growing up here!! The run totals 8 miles and though it has been awhile since they all have run, one man carried the torch this year!! Bob who turned 72 this year made the 8 mile run in just under a 100 mins!! The Dutchman stands tall and gives a solid salute to you sir!! I was so impressed with old boy, I made a oath to run the 8 miles with him next year!! I have a feeling I won't beat the 100 min mark!! LOL! I may need to be picked up from the side of the road!! LOL!! Never the less I will give it my all!! The Quakeathon got me thinking..... Birchdale is almost 26 miles from The Dutchman, I think I smell the making of an awesome marathon!! Give some input, I'd like to here what you other running and fishing folk think of that!! Maybe even have a boatathon!! LOL!!
The walleyes!! The lake be filled with fat golden hogs!!! The deep mud is stacked thick with pigs and they are Hungry!! The last outings have left my cooler near empty and my phone full of pictures of steam boat eyes!!! I have heard good reports of eaters being caught in the shallows in front Pine Island!! I intend to find out for myself in the next few days to come!!
The Sturgeon!! We were out on the water the second we could chase Dinos again, and it didn't take long to hook up, 12:15 am July 1st the wolf packs 1st sturgeon was netted!! It was a 50" sight for sore eyes!! I was having phone issues (battery died) so no pics from that night!! We were out 2 hours and land 2 sturgeon!! No giants, but still awesome in their own respect!! We were out again 2 days ago and Humpty hooked up with a nice 40" sturgeon to start his season!! Other guest's that have been out chasing Dino's have been having some luck as well!!
Looking for that cure from the summer time blues, come on up and chase some Dinos!! I guarantee you'll feel better if you do!!
Life's to short to live like a dog on a chain!! Break those chains and set yourself free!! Be your true self and chase your dreams!!! Put your best foot forward, walk proud and make sure to smile!! A good day, is any day that your alive!! A great day is any day your doing what you love !! Tight lines till next time!! For those about to fish, we salute you!! I'll see you on the water The Dutchman signing out!!
Hello and good evening from The Dutchman!! That's right I'm back!! It's officially Sturgeon season on the Rainy river!! I'm currently sitting on the river in front of the resort chasing dino's! The Wolf pack is thirsty for blood and the sturgeon are rolling hard tonight anything can happen and probably will!! Stay tuned for live action when we hook up into one those mighty beasts of the Rainy river!! For those about to fish we salute you!! The Dutchman signing out!
The Dutchman went fishing this morning with some guests; early again! Looking at the weather, they were expecting it to be pretty calm but I guess the waves were pretty bad right away this morning. Jeffy puked twice and then was fine. True champ!
On another note.....Way to go Dutchman on his new PB walleye; 30"! It has been a great last couple of days on the lake. Another group, Tim and his wife, Sharon had a great day today as well. Got a 27 and a 25 and 2 other slot fish plus eaters and 3 saugers! It has been some great weather this weekend too!
Hope everyone has a great Monday/week! I have a lot on the To Do List but first on my list to tackle, is cleaning windows!! Now don't be too jealous....but I'm sure the kids and I will make fun out of it some how. Meaning they will last probably 10 minutes, start spraying each other with the water and soap, then there will be words and tears and then they will be done; sound familiar! Remember to cherish all the short little moments in life!
"For those about to fish, we salute you!"

As The Dutchman continues his vow of silence until sturgeon time comes....you get me yet again!! Oh, Oh, oh, lucky you guys!
Most of the Wolf Pack was out yesterday morning out by Zipple Bay,,,fishin' the mudd! Early bird gets the worm type of morning....any way, they did really good. Almost came home with all 4 limits in four hours. Anchor and Jig, repeat. 15 slot fish, 6 over 27"; 27 and 1/2" being the biggest. Jeffrey was smiling ear to ear when he came home.
Of course we had a fish fry then and it was great! The Dutchman has been doing this Ritz crackers batter which is super amazing. I woke up with another migraine yesterday morning so I wasn't up to eating too much but....oh you just can't pass up fresh fish!
4th of July is just around the corner and I can't wait. I love fireworks! The plan is to get in the boat, and head towards Baudette to watch the fireworks on the River!! We are booked up that weekend so it should be a really great time!
Then after that is OUR County Fair! July 14-17th in Baudette! Another great time in the summer. We always take in a fair or two during the summers. I love the food and all the people watching; oh and the kids love the rides! Hoping for some nice weather! We have some rooms left so come help me break in the Lake of The Woods County Fair!
Summer is going to go by fast so get your vacation lined up! Everyone deserves a good time!
"For those about to fish, we salute you!"

Sorry for the delay, I have been down with a migraine that just won't go away and The Dutchman has been doing his best to keep up with everything. I'm finally getting a little better, a couple days ago I was wearing 2 pairs of sunglasses and ear muffs, yesterday I was down to just 1 pair of sunglasses and today I can walk around the house without my sunglasses!
We've had an exciting week or two! We have new T-shirts in, love the colors and they are nice light weight ones. Prefect for summer or a bottom layer!
We checked out Zipple Bay State Park on one of the more windy days with one of the groups! Kids had sooo much fun, it was like their own personal wave pool that never stopped! I'm definitely keeping that on the list as to what to do, especially on a windy, warm day!
Jeffrey caught a gardener snake and thought he could bring it in my house....haha funny little boy...NO WAY!!!! He got to watch it and spend some time with it; I can't remember what he named it but we made him let it go. After we put the dog in of course. Pretty sure Macy (the dog in the picture), was thinking it might be a toy or a great afternoon snack. We have been trying to catch Leopard frogs with no luck so if any one has some good ideas...message us!!
We had a double family visit this past weekend. My Uncle and Aunt and Kevin's Uncle, Aunt and Cousin! We ate together, took in the TONS of Lady Slippers in my back yard, went to Clementson, chased the sunset, and much more!
Summer is over in a blink of an eye; don't forget to get in your getting away...…a time to stop, smell the roses and just plain enjoy yourself; GIVE US A CALL!
Fishing has been fair. Jeffrey continues to catch bass right off the dock. Today, Kev went with some guests and went up and down the shore lines; got some smaller northers and some small mouths. One guys hooked into a Sturgeon but it got off....either way, him and his buddy are both hooked and will be coming back!
Well, it's been great everyone but I'm really not much for words so with that being said...For those about to fish, We salute you!
---Jenn
The kids and I made it!! We had to leave early and abruptly when Jeffrey's allergies just blew up! It was crazy hot and soo many people cutting hay. Sorry to all those that we didn't get to see, grandparents, brothers and sisters, friends and my 2nd family at Haley Comfort Systems. There was no way Jeffrey was going to last another day!
I pulled our big Glacier Ice House and picked up a load from my dads, Walmart, Sams club, etc. Mostly at my dads.....I made out like a bandit! And it was only my 2nd time pulling a big trailer like that, other than on the farm and pulling equipment behind the tractor.....it is not the same! I found out how MUCH easier it is to haul a full trailer than a empty trailer too. Only one time did I think we were goners and at least 4 times someone pulled in front of me and I knew I couldn't stop....but those who have ever played chicken with me knows to get the #$%@ out of my way. I think part of getting your license, everyone should have to pull a trailer around and see how it is. Guarantee it would solve a lot of car/truck and trailer accidents. Sayings that came out of the trip: "slow and steady wins the race", "give yourself a buffer zone for vehicles' in front of you", "mom, you're twerking with the trailer and the back of the truck"! That's just a few; the kids were hilarious to listen to and have them tell me stories or their view points on EVERYTHING!
We were gone for a week and The Dutchman ROCKED it! But it was only Day 3 and the first thing out of his mouth was, "you can come home now"! It's a lot for 1 person but he did great! Thank goodness Mikey was around to keep him on track!!
Now, The Dutchman says he is taking a vow of silence until sturgeon fishing opens up again.....whatever I say. Just give me a couple of days to get my foot as far up as I can and there will be a post on here from him!
Exciting Side Note: We have Lady Slippers here!! The Dutchman found them while mowing and came to show me. Told me I had to close my eyes and then walked me like a quarter of a mile it seemed like....I was so scared that I was going to trip or he was going to not steer me away from objects but I have been really excited to see them since I heard how beautiful they are up here! HUGE, they are sooo big and cool looking. Love them. I don't think I've ever seen them this big before. They are about a week or 2 earlier this year from what I'm being told. It has been a hot one.
Fishing has been slow on the river but I've heard of good reports from the Lake and the best reports have been coming from Springsteel and Zipple bay area. We did get out on the boat yesterday for a little bit but never fished. Jeffrey has been catching Northern and different kinds of Bass fish right off the dock!

I am hot and when I'm not, I'm cold as ice!!! Good evening from the land of walleye!! Yesterday I broke a sweat and avoided the sun!! Today, I saw the kids off to the bus while flurries of snow flakes came down!! Welcome to Minnesota!! Love it!!
Another day of progress here at RDR, switched out a bed and a bed frame. The bed frame was only a month old and made me wonder what the words heavy duty and quality mean in today's world? It seems the saying, "they don't make them like they use to", is spot on! Welcome to the throw away generation! Speaking of throw away, me and The Dutchess have been hard at work sorting through 40 years of Dutchman's past and getting rid of much of it!! Out with the old and in with the new! The Dutchess be kind of a hoarder so we need to make room for the stuff she will a mass along this new journey!! LOL!! There is still along way to go. We are still clearing the basement and then it's off to the other side of the road and the garage!!
I am hoping that the wind will die down and with that little shot of moisture we got this morning, maybe I can get a burn permit and burn the river bank! I also picked up a mowing job for a property management company. The property is just down the road from RDR. I kind of feel like Forest Gump saying that, but I ain't doing it for free though! LOL! The Dutchess got some sweet shots of some rainbows over the river yesterday!! One was even flying! No joke! The picture won't do it justice, you got to come see it for yourself! We got your room ready!!
If I can keep myself pushing along, I should be ready to put in some work on the walleyes out on the lake before the weekend hits!! Wish me luck!! For those about to fish, we salute you!! I'll see you on the water!! The Dutchman signing out!!!
It's good to be King!!!! The Dino's of the Rainy River have new Royalty!!! Good morning from The Dutchman!! Its been 10 days since the end of The King of The Rainy and new Royalty have been crowned!! Congrats to all who participated and made it a truly epic tournament!! A big salute to Chad Buchanan for his epic fish that set the bar to the extreme!! Wear your crown proudly, you earned it !! There were many right at your heels, but none would surpass!! The Royal Dutchman brought home a crown as well!!! Humpty took biggest fish in the youth division!! He landed a 67" beast, which I will say watching him go toe to toe with that giant is right up there as the best moment of my life!! He had a fierce competitor and she took home a crown of her own!!! Congrats to Elizabeth Gallager and her impressive stringer of 3 that totaled 182.75"!! Hail to the Queen!!! I can't wait till next year!! Side note I am thinking of holding a tournament this fall and am open to ideas!! Comment or message me!!
Play hard, work even harder!! I was driven during The King of The Rainy tournament and logged some serious hours on the river!! All other things got side lined!! That has left me wishing I could split myself in two!! I have big ideas and plans for RDR and have spent the last 10 days getting back to the point of being able to think about those ideas and plans!! The power of a positive attitude can move mountains and clear some land for camper and RV sites!! That's just what we intend to do!! Anybody looking for that perfect hide away for your seasonal camper site keep your eyes open, as I will be posting about the progress being made!! We will also be adding a community shower and bathroom area as well!! We are going to put in daily sites as well!! Fingers crossed we have some sites ready for the fall shiner run of this year!! Be the perfect spot to put your ice house before the freezes up!!!
Summer is nearly here and there are many reasons to come up and visit the land of walleye!! Give Royal Dutchman Resort a call, or message us on Facebook!! Let RDR be the base camp for your adventure, whether you come to fish, bird watch, berry pick, or just pick that spot to take a load off and watch the river all day, we got all the necessities to make your summer adventure one not to be forgotten!!
That should get us caught up and put you to sleep!! LOL!! I have been missing you all and hope all is well!! 36 days till I can hunt Dinos again!!! 36 days to get busy moving mountains!!! If your looking to come chase Dinos this fall or next spring, give The Dutchman a call or message me!! Your boat or mine!! Lets go fishing!!! For those about to fish, we salute you!!! I'll see you on the water!! The Dutchman signing out!!
FYI!!!!!!! The lake is snapping good right now!! I will be out later this week!! You should be out there right now!! LOL!! Tight lines!!!
